Why Do Flying Ants Suddenly Appear?

One day there are none, the next they're everywhere. Here's why flying ants seem to materialise out of nowhere.

They've been underground all along

The winged ants you suddenly see have spent their lives developing inside the nest. They only emerge when conditions are exactly right for their mating flight.

They synchronise across whole regions

Colonies respond to the same weather cues — warmth, humidity and still air — so huge numbers emerge simultaneously across a town or even a county. This "safety in numbers" overwhelms predators and boosts mating success.

The trigger is weather, not date

That's why the timing shifts each year and why they appear so abruptly: everyone's waiting for the same signal, and when it arrives, they all launch at once.
